As a professional photographer, I am met with the question, "Why should I pay for your services when I can just use the (free) camera on my phone?"
This is a valid question I've encountered countless times, and it's one that I am passionate about addressing.
So, allow me to put down my camera for a moment and pick up my pen (keyboard) to dive into the world of professional photography and why it is worth every penny.
It's no secret that we live in a world where everyone has access to a camera, whether it's built into their phone or a small point-and-shoot device.
In fact, in my study of the craft, I found a stat that estimated over one trillion photos are taken each year, and a large portion of those are captured on smartphones. With such easy access to photography, it's easy to understand why some may question the need for professional photographers.
Here's the truth: There is a stark difference between taking a photo and making a photo.
As the lead photographer here at Z Media, I am not just capturing an image; I am creating a visual masterpiece, crafting an emotion, and freezing time in the perfectly timed, composed, and color-graded moment.
It's not just about the equipment I use, although that does play a significant role; it's about the years of experience, knowledge, and skill that I bring to the table. Anyone can point and shoot with a 4k camera, but how many know where to point, when to shoot, and how to edit in a way that showcases what is being observed..?
I have spent countless hours perfecting my craft, studying lighting, composition, and editing techniques.
Since I was in High School, I have had a pull towards photography; in the same way, Tom Brady was meant to throw a football, Picasso was meant to paint, and Adele was born to sing - I am a photographer; it's my thing, and it's the lens (no pun intended) from which I view the entire world every day.
I think, live, and operate in photos.
I have invested in the equipment and continue to stay updated on the latest technology and trends in the industry. But most importantly, I have a passion for telling stories through photographs.
So I hope you're starting to see a professional photographer doesn't just click a button and hope for the best.
We carefully plan and execute every shot, taking into consideration factors like lighting, angles, and composition; we have the ability to bring out the best in our subjects, capturing their true essence and personality through our lenses.
A camera on a phone can take an amazing photo, but it cannot replicate an amazing photographer.
Take & Make
Another crucial aspect of professional photography is the editing process.
This is one of the areas where I stand out from others, but I say it in the sense that this is what separates all photographers from one another.
While it may seem like anyone with access to filters can edit a photo, the truth is that it takes a trained eye and attention to detail to create a stunning final product. Photographers carefully color-correct, retouch, and enhance images to bring out their full potential. It's a time-consuming process, but the end result is an image that is truly one of a kind.
My turnaround time is lightning-fast compared to most, but that's because editing is what drives so many insane, and I love it. I enjoy the editing process and will spend stupid time going back and forth on whether something should look this way vs. that; I like the challenge and opportunity to make a photo after taking it, and that right there is the unique fingerprint delivered by photographers...
I edit in a way that drives the emotion of the moment home; I want it to be as dynamic and impactful as possible, as though the viewer stumbled across an intimate moment. I am aware that I'm creating a personal and meaningful experience for my clients, and it's something I do not take lightly.
As a photographer, I work closely with my clients to understand their vision and bring it to life. I strive to make them feel comfortable, confident, and, ultimately, happy with the final product. This level of personalized service and attention to detail is something that a free camera on a phone simply cannot offer.
It's essential to recognize the value of preserving memories.
In this digital age, it's easy to take hundreds of photos and leave them stored on a phone or computer, never to be looked at again. I take the time to present photographs in a way that turns them into tangible memories; my ultimate aim is for my work to become prints, and that is something I will begin offering in 2024.
I believe that photographs are meant to be displayed and cherished for years to come, and as a professional, I am committed to providing my clients with high-quality printed products that will last a lifetime.
In conclusion, professional photographers are worth the cost because we offer a skill set and experience that cannot be replicated by a free camera on a phone.
We are all out here going above and beyond to create stunning visual art that tells a story and captures memories.
Remember this: When you work with me, we aren't just going to be taking photos together; we're going to be making incredible moments that will be photo'd together.
